By Indian Constitutionalism, today Indians are proud to claim ownership of a Constitution which has sustained democracy, human rights and the rule of law for over six decades. One hundred and twenty five crore Indians constituting nearly one-fifth of the human race, belonging to diverse religions, speaking different languages and following varied political ideologies are united as one, sharing a common destiny under a secular, democratic state.
Free and fair elections involving over 600 million voters, smooth transfer of power and demonstrated strength of unity in diversity have made the so-called developed world wonder whether democracy has been part of the genetic construction of Indians.
The story of this political miracle embedded in India’s freedom struggle, in the making of its Constitution, in the statesmanship of its political leadership particularly during the initial journey of the Republic, and the vision of India’s first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, is discussed in this book on Indian Constitutionalism.
